The University seeks to appoint an assitant professor to the Department of Odontology to commence 1 November 2023 or as soon as possible. The position is a full-time position limited to 4 years.
About the department
We aim to promote health in the population by optimizing diagnostics, prevention and treatment of diseases in the oral and craniofacial areas. Our purpose includes research-based and -integrating teaching to ensure that basic, translational and clinical research reaches clinical practice.
We focus on interdisciplinary research across our three research sections and collaborate with national and international institutions, municipalities, regional hospitals, private practice, and businesses in the medical field to solve complex challenges regarding interactions between oral and medical diseases. The main body of staff at the Department of Odontology is financed by public funding.
The job relates to periodontology, which is positioned in the Research Section of Oral Biology and Immunopathology.

Job description
As an assistant professor at the Department of Odontology your main emphasis will be on performing original and innovative scientific work at an international level and contribute with high quality researched-based and -integrating teaching to our pre-graduate curriculum. Correspondingly, it is expected that the assistant professor completes the Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Programme. Other tasks include examination of bachelor’s and master’s degree students.
The job concerns the area of periodontology, where we aim to increase our knowledge about periodontal disease, in particular the immunological aspects of periodontitis, the treatment of this disease and its association with and influence on a number of medical diseases. We expect a general view at periodontal health care with focusing on interdisciplinary collaborations. As assistant professor, you will be expected to make a difference for both patients and on a societal level. As assistant professor, you will undertake research projects with relevance for the many different stakeholders including patients, practitioners, and decision makers. Furthermore, you will have to develop and conduct teaching primarily within periodontology using evidence based medicine as the framework. We expect a general experience in disease classification, prevention and treatment, as well as working with digital teaching tools.
The assistant professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:
- Original research, including publication in international peer-reviewed journals /academic dissemination
- Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of pre-graduate research students
- Actively applying for external funding
- Research-based and -integrating teaching, including associated examination
- Supervision of Bachelor projects and Master theses
- Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
- Academic assessments
- Administrative functions
- Contribution to a positive working and educational environment

Essential experience and skills:
Candidates are required to possess scientific qualifications such as the MSc Degree in Dentistry, and a PhD or doctorate degree in periodontology or similar qualifications. If you do not have the authorization to work independently as a dentist in Denmark, it must be obtained as fast as possible, as this position requires treatment of patients.
The assistant professor is expected to be fluent in oral and written English, and international applicants are expected to learn Danish and to speak/understand the language at a sufficient level within a reasonable period. All patient records must be kept in Danish, and Danish is the official language of instruction in the Graduate Programme in Dentistry.
Place and terms of employment
The place of employment is at the Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
The position as assistant professor is a temporary position for 4 years and is to commence on 1 November 2023 or as soon as possible hereafter. The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 36,200 DKK/approx. 4,850 EUR (April 2023 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

The further process
